ABOUT ARTWORK
My artwork aims to explore the glacial terrain, boulders and ancient ruins that make up the landscape of Scotland, particularly the Highlands. My work can be divided into 2 areas - papier-mache based sculptures and large scale paper drawings. The sculptures represent boulders which aim to evoke the ghost, or soul, of these boulders, acting as excavations of Earth in the future. They aim to represent a geological archaeology rather than a human one. They are also a textural exploration of papier-mache and the ambiguous quality of the resulting object.
The large scale paper drawings are an intuitive exploration of mark making, drawing on the Scottish landscape in terms of its geography, colours and impact through memory, to develop an abstract form that is then drawn back into to depict pictish symbols and ancient ruins. The landscape from which my work is strongly influenced is that which surrounds sites of ancient ruins, particularly Brochs. Along with exploring the landscape in terms of its glaciation and ancient ruins, my work also hopes to evoke notions of ancient, geographical and future time.
